Summer Newsletter 2023 – Model United Nations

Tower College recently took nine pupils to participate in the annual Model United Nations conference at Withington Girls’ School. Our delegates represented Portugal and Denmark and had to engage in debates covering such complex topics as electoral violence, endangered wildlife, the separation of migrant families, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on education worldwide.

Taking part in public speaking events requires a great amount of bravery and a desire to embrace challenges, and it is always wonderful to see Tower College pupils participate and grow in confidence the more they speak. The event was also an excellent opportunity to meet pupils from other schools and make new friends.

Our full teams were Sarah, Taylor, Declan, and Harvey (Denmark) and Sam, Rodrigo, Will, Samuel, and Isabelle (Portugal). Congratulations, in particular, go to Sarah (Highly Commended), Declan (Commended), and Isabelle (special mention), who were singled out for awards by the chairs of their committees.

Model UN will run as a lunchtime club from September, open to any pupils from Years 7-11. Our school has been invited to a conference on Saturday, 25th November, at the Queen’s School in Chester, and we would be delighted to take pupils who feel they can participate and represent us well at this event.
